A conference is being held at the residence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge in the national capital to choose candidates for the Karnataka Assembly elections, as the party has yet to disclose the names of candidates for 58 seats. Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, also arrived for the meeting. The party’s Central Election Committee has met at least four times and deliberated on all 224 assembly candidates, although 58 more candidates have yet to be announced.
The party had declared 124 candidates on its initial list and 42 more on its second list. The Election Commission stated on March 29 that the Karnataka elections for 224 assembly seats will be held on May 10, with the results counted on May 13.
With the Karnataka Assembly elections approaching, Mallikarjun Kharge appointed BN Chandrappa, a former Lok Sabha member, as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee’s fifth working president on Sunday. While DK Shivakumar is the Karnataka Congress chairman, the KPCC already has four active presidents in the form of Ramalinga Reddy, Eshwar Khandre, Saleem Ahmed, and Satish Jarkiholi.
In 2014-19, Chandrappa was elected to the Lok Sabha from Chitradurga.
The ruling BJP now has a 119-seat majority in the Legislature, while the Congress and JD(S) have 75 and 28 seats, respectively. The state’s three major political parties, the BJP, the Congress, and the JD(S), have been exchanging barbs as their election campaigns progress.
