Muthuvel Karunanidhi, commonly known as Kalaignar, commenced his political journey in 1953 with his involvement in the renowned Kallakudi demonstration. He entered the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly by winning the Kulithalai seat in Tiruchirapalli during the 1957 election, alongside 14 other successful DMK candidates. Karunanidhi was appointed as the DMK treasurer in 1960.
Achieving another victory in the state assembly on February 21, 1962, representing the Thanjavur constituency, Karunanidhi was appointed as the deputy leader of the opposition in the same year.
The political career of Annadurai, known as Perarignar, began when he joined the Justice Party in 1935. Under his leadership, in 1944 at a rally led by Periyar, a resolution was passed declaring that the Justice Party should be known as Dravidar Kazhagam. Annadurai announced the formation of the DMK in 1949.
In 1957, Annadurai became the leader of the opposition in the state assembly. He was later nominated as a member of Parliament to the Rajya Sabha in 1962. Serving as the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for 20 days in 1969, Annadurai was also the fifth and final Chief Minister of Madras from 1967 until 1969 when the state’s name was changed to Tamil Nadu.
