The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its criticism of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of protecting those responsible for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The party has gone so far as to label Banerjee “dictator” and is calling for her immediate resignation to ensure an impartial investigation into the case.
At a press conference held at the BJP headquarters, national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia expressed deep concern over the state of affairs in West Bengal. “Whatever is happening in West Bengal is worrisome. It’s akin to tearing the Constitution to shreds. It’s clearly visible that if at all there is a dictator in the country, it’s Mamata Banerjee,” Bhatia stated, highlighting the party’s frustration with the current state administration.
The BJP’s demands are twofold. Firstly, they insist that Banerjee step down from her position as Chief Minister to facilitate a fair investigation into the tragic death of the trainee doctor. Secondly, the party is urging the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a polygraph test on both Banerjee and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel. The BJP alleges that Goel initially mischaracterized the victim’s death as a suicide, further complicating the case and casting doubt on the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
The party’s outcry comes in the wake of a recent protest by students in Kolkata, who were met with a lathi charge by the West Bengal Police as they rallied to demand justice for the deceased doctor and the resignation of Banerjee. The BJP condemned the police’s heavy-handed response, viewing it as another example of the state’s disregard for justice and accountability.
Bhatia did not mince words in his condemnation, accusing Banerjee of shielding those involved in the heinous crime. “Truth must come out. The CBI is investigating the case. It should conduct a polygraph test on Mamata Banerjee and the police commissioner to ascertain the truth,” he added, reiterating the party’s call for a thorough and unbiased probe.
The BJP’s demands have further escalated the political tensions in West Bengal, where the ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Banerjee, has frequently clashed with the BJP. The trainee doctor’s death has now become a flashpoint, with the opposition party leveraging the case to challenge the Chief Minister’s leadership and demand greater transparency in the state’s law enforcement practices.
