Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the recently dismissed principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has been embroiled in controversy following the tragic death of a trainee post-graduate doctor on the hospital premises. Former colleagues of Dr. Ghosh have come forward with serious allegations, branding him as a “very corrupt person” and accusing him of numerous unethical practices during his tenure.
The scandal erupted after the body of the trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the medical college on August 9, raising suspicions of rape and murder. As the investigation continues, the victim’s family has demanded a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Among the most vocal critics of Dr. Ghosh is Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College. Ali has made a series of damning accusations against Ghosh, asserting that he was deeply involved in corruption within the institution. “He is a very corrupt person. He used to fail students. He used to get 20% commission on tender orders. He used to loot money for every job that was taken up at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He used to provide alcohol to students at his guest house. He was like a mafia person,” Akhtar Ali told news agency ANI.
Ali further claimed that Dr. Ghosh wielded significant power and influence within the institution, often using his position to intimidate others. “Ghosh used to have big security. He is very powerful. I had filed a complaint against him in 2023. His resignation was just an eyewash. He was appointed as a principal at National Medical College within eight hours after his resignation,” Ali added, suggesting that Ghosh’s departure from RG Kar Medical College was a calculated move to escape scrutiny.
The allegations against Dr. Ghosh have fueled public outrage, especially in light of the trainee doctor’s death. In response to the growing controversy, the National Medical Commission (NMC), acting on directives from Union Health Minister JP Nadda, has issued an advisory to all medical colleges and institutions. The advisory urges these institutions to develop and implement policies that ensure a safe working environment for their staff and students, emphasizing the need for robust measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The death of the post-graduate trainee doctor has sent shockwaves through the medical community, prompting widespread calls for justice. The victim’s family has been vocal in their demand for a comprehensive investigation into the case, including the circumstances that led to her death. Authorities have assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and that those responsible will be held accountable.
As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on the allegations against Dr. Ghosh and the systemic issues within RG Kar Medical College. The case has also sparked a broader conversation about the safety and well-being of medical professionals in India, with many calling for urgent reforms to protect those who dedicate their lives to the healthcare profession.
