Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the picturesque Union Territory of Lakshadweep in January has sparked a surge in interest among tourists, with tourism officer Imthias Mohammed T B confirming a notable increase in inquiries to visit the island region.
Describing the impact of PM Modi’s visit, Imthias told Media Source, “The impact is huge, we are receiving lots of inquiries.” He highlighted that Lakshadweep is now receiving inquiries from both the national and international tourism markets.
Discussing future initiatives of the tourism department, Imthias mentioned that Lakshadweep aims to attract more cruise ship companies to the region. He also addressed the connectivity issue with mainland India, noting that with streamlined air connectivity, the influx of tourists is expected to rise significantly.
Tourists from various parts of the country have shared their experiences, expressing their desire to visit Lakshadweep after seeing PM Modi’s photos and videos from his trip. A tourist from Mumbai, Aman Singh, stated, “We wanted to come for a very long time to Lakshadweep but there were many myths associated with the island. PM Modi’s visit had an impact that it is possible to go.”
Sumit Anand from Delhi echoed similar sentiments, saying he had always wanted to visit Lakshadweep but was inspired to make it his next destination after seeing PM Modi’s posts.
Earlier, on January 4, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar highlighted the global attention drawn to Lakshadweep and its tourism potential following PM Modi’s visit. He tweeted, “By visiting Lakshadweep, PM @narendramodi has focused attention on its immense potential for tourism. This is a great inspiration for all of us. More visitors will contribute to Lakshadweep’s prosperity. They will also experience its unique culture and traditions.”
During his visit, PM Modi shared several pictures of the breathtaking landscapes and his snorkeling experience, inviting adventure enthusiasts to add Lakshadweep to their travel list. In a tweet, he encouraged travelers, saying, “For those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep has to be on your list.”
The Lok Sabha elections for the Lakshadweep constituency, reserved for Scheduled Tribes, are scheduled for April 19. This constituency is among the 543 Lok Sabha seats for which elections will be held in seven phases, beginning on April 19. The counting of votes is set for June 4.
