Cyclone Remal Turns Severe With Wind Speeds Of 80-90 Kilometres Per Hour, 2 Killed In West Bengal

After making landfall between the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal on Sunday night, May 26, the severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ began moving northwards and continues to do so, gradually weakening on Monday, May 27, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“The system will continue to move nearly northwards for some more time, then shift north-northeastwards, and gradually weaken into a Cyclonic Storm by the morning of May 27, 2024,” the IMD reported.

Earlier on Sunday, before the landfall, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting at his residence to evaluate the preparedness for Cyclone ‘Remal’ in the North Bay of Bengal.

Following the landfall, Kolkata experienced heavy rain and strong winds. Teams from the Kolkata Municipality and Kolkata Police Disaster Management are actively clearing uprooted trees in the Alipore area. Deputy Commissioner of South Kolkata, Priyabrata Roy, revealed that teams are working to clear roads of uprooted trees, and the situation is expected to improve by morning. Unified control rooms are monitoring the situation throughout the night.

Nearly 15,000 houses in 24 blocks and 79 municipal wards, primarily in the southern coastal areas of West Bengal, were affected by Cyclone Remal, as revealed by a senior state government official. He shared that at least 2,140 trees were uprooted across the state, along with the collapse of 337 electric poles. According to the initial assessment, a total of 14,941 houses were damaged, with 13,938 partially affected and 1,003 completely destroyed.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee voiced profound concern regarding the repercussions of Cyclone Remal in the Sundarbans and other coastal regions. She held discussions with Chief Secretary B. P. Gopalika to evaluate the extent of damage and the ongoing restoration endeavors. An official stated, “The CM inquired about the casualties, injuries, damage assessment such as uprooted electric poles and trees, and the status of restoration operations.”

Government officials have confirmed that the death toll from Cyclone Remal, which struck low-lying regions of Bangladesh, has climbed to a minimum of 10 individuals. The cyclone demolished over 30,000 residences and inflicted damage on tens of thousands more.

“They predominantly lost their lives due to being trapped under collapsed homes or walls,” stated Showkat Ali, the government administrator of Barisal district, where seven fatalities occurred. Three more deaths were reported in adjacent districts.

The cyclone weakened into a cyclonic storm on Monday morning, maintaining wind speeds of 80-90 kilometers per hour after making landfall around midnight on Sunday, according to the Met Department. The department reported that the weather system, located 150 km northeast of Sagar Island at 5:30 a.m., brought torrential rain and moved northeastwards, weakening further into a cyclonic storm.

Three people were injured and vehicular movement was disrupted as trees were uprooted in several parts of Kolkata following Cyclone Remal’s landfall in West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh, officials said on Monday.

Reports of uprooted trees have come in from Southern Avenue, Lake Place, Chetla, D L Khan Road, Dufferin Road, Ballygunge Road, New Alipore, Behala, Jadavpur, Golpark, Hatibagan, Jagat Mukherjee Park, College Street, and the city’s adjoining Salt Lake area.

The Northeast Frontier Railway announced the cancellation of 42 trains for two days starting Monday. Parts of Assam, including Guwahati, have been experiencing rainfall since late Sunday, offering relief from the high temperatures. No damage from the cyclone has been reported so far. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on X, “Cyclone Remal can bring inclement weather to parts of Assam. We are taking several precautionary measures.”
