Lokpal Directs CBI Probe into ‘Cash for Query’ Allegations Against Trinamool Congress Leader Mahua Moitra

The Lokpal, on Tuesday, issued a directive to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the allegations of ‘cash for query’ against Trinamool Congress leader and former MP Mahua Moitra. The probe, under Section 20(3)(a), is mandated to cover all aspects of the allegations and submit a report within six months, with monthly status updates.

The decision by Lokpal comes after a thorough assessment of the evidence, deeming the allegations against Moitra as extremely serious, given her position. The order highlights the need for a deeper investigation to ascertain the truth.

Moitra, who was expelled from the Lok Sabha in December last year based on findings from the ethics committee, has consistently denied any wrongdoing. She has attributed the allegations to targeting, particularly as she has raised questions regarding the dealings of the Adani Group.

The complaint against Moitra, lodged by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, accused her of accepting “cash and gifts” from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for raising questions in Parliament. Dubey expressed satisfaction with the Lokpal’s decision, emphasizing the pursuit of truth in the matter.

Earlier this month, the Delhi High Court dismissed Moitra’s plea seeking to restrain individuals from making allegations in the cash-for-query case, further setting the stage for the ongoing legal scrutiny surrounding the allegations against her.
