Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) chief and Assam agriculture minister Atul Bora visited the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in Guwahati on Thursday, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. In Assam, the ruling BJP has the AGP as an ally.
An alliance was formed between the AGP and the BJP prior to the 2016 Assam assembly elections. The Asom Gana Parishad broke with the BJP in 2019 as a result of the Citizenship Amendment Act’s passing (CAA). But the regional party teamed up with the BJP once more. This year’s Lok Sabha elections are slated to take place in April and May. As part of the process of choosing candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP leadership convened a core group meeting on Wednesday with representatives from several states. Party chief JP Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with leaders about the list of names that their respective state units had recommended.
Prior to today’s party Central Election Committee meeting, sources said that core committee meetings were held for a number of states, including Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam in addition to the union territory of Delhi. They predicted that the party’s initial candidate list would contain more than 100 names.
