Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge has addressed a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, urging attention to the Agnipath scheme and seeking justice for nearly two lakh young individuals aspiring to join the Armed Forces. Kharge raised significant concerns about the sudden implementation of the Agnipath Scheme, asserting that it has left the futures of countless youth in uncertainty.
In his letter, Kharge revealed, “Recently, I met them and they told me that between 2019 and 2022, almost two lakh young men and women were informed that they had been accepted into the three armed services: the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force.” These individuals had successfully navigated rigorous tests and examinations, only to face a sudden shift with the introduction of the Agnipath Scheme.
Kharge highlighted that the Agnipath Scheme has faced criticism, even from former Chief of Army Staff General MM Naravane, who mentioned that it took the Army by surprise. The Congress leader labeled the scheme as discriminatory among jawans, creating parallel cadres with varying emoluments, benefits, and prospects.
Furthermore, Kharge pointed out the uncertainty caused by the Agnipath Scheme, leading to reported suicides among frustrated youths. He emphasized the financial burden on applicants who paid fees for forms that were never refunded.
Expressing concern for the well-being of the youth, Kharge appealed to President Murmu to ensure justice and fairness. His letter drew attention to the struggles and sacrifices made by these aspiring candidates, asserting that they cannot be allowed to suffer further.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi echoed Kharge’s sentiments, expressing support for the military candidates and their fight for justice. Kharge’s letter and the concerns raised indicate growing dissatisfaction with the Agnipath Scheme, with calls for a resolution and reconsideration of the recruitment process.
