Manipur: CBI Special Director To Probe Murder of Two Students

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team, led by Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar, touched down in Imphal earlier today via a specially arranged flight to probe the alleged “kidnapping and killing” of two students, according to insider sources. The disappearance of the two young individuals, dating back to July 6, had raised concerns and captured the nation’s attention.

Upon their arrival at Imphal Airport, the CBI team refrained from commenting on the incident, maintaining a shroud of secrecy around their ongoing investigation.

Protests in Manipur escalated following a viral video of two youths’ bodies, prompting the government to suspend internet services and close schools until Friday.

An official notification from the Manipur Home Department cited the necessity of taking preventive measures against the imminent threats to life, potential damage to public and private property, and the disruption of public tranquillity. The notification expressed grave concern about the spread of disinformation, false rumours, and violent activities via various social media platforms, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and others, as well as through electronic devices like tablets, computers, and mobile phones. These activities are seen as potentially facilitating or mobilizing agitators and demonstrators, thereby exacerbating the law and order situation in the state.

Earlier this week, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh confirmed the impending visit of CBI Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar. In a social media post, Chief Minister Singh stated, “In light of the distressing news that emerged yesterday regarding the tragic demise of the missing students, I want to assure the people of the state that both the state and central governments are closely collaborating to apprehend the perpetrators.”

He added, “To expedite this critical investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director, accompanied by a specialized team, is scheduled to arrive in Imphal tomorrow morning via a specially arranged flight. Their presence underscores the commitment of our authorities to promptly resolve this matter. I have maintained constant communication with Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah ji to identify the culprits and bring them to justice.”

Manipur has been grappling with violence since May 3, stemming from protests against a High Court order requesting the state government to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category.
