Hundreds of people gathered in Jantar Mantar to stage a protest against the viral video of two Manipur women who were paraded naked.
Kuki Community protested at Jantar Mantar on July 21 against a horrific Manipur video and demanded immediate justice and the resignation of the Manipur Chief Minister.
Protesters were demanding a separate administration to end the violence and restore peace in the troubled northeastern state. Activists from the All India Students’ Association and the Krantikari Yuva Sangathan also gathered for the protest, displaying placards and banners with messages like “CM Biren Singh must resign” and “End violence in Manipur.” They also called for strict action against those responsible for the disgraceful act of disrobing and parading two women naked in the state. The tension in Manipur escalated after a video surfaced on May 4, showing men from one community parading two women from the other community naked.
Women’s groups organized nationwide demonstrations in response to a sexual assault case that occurred amid ethnic hostilities in the state of Manipur, and the Indian parliament was disrupted for a second day on July 21.
Since the violence began on May 3, at least 125 people have died and more than 40,000 have left their homes in Manipur.
The conflict in the state bordering Myanmar started when the Kuki tribal group and the ethnic majority Meitei battled over the distribution of economic advantages and quotas allocated to the tribes.
