BSP chief Mayawati backs Center on new Parliament row, terms Opposition’s boycott ‘unfair’

Chief of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Mayawati stated on Thursday that it is “unfair” that some opposition parties have decided to boycott the launching ceremony of the new Parliament building, claiming that the government has the right to do so because they are the ones who built it.

“The boycott and linking it to the respect of tribal women (President Murmu) is completely unfair,” BSP supremo said. Mayawati, although clarified that she will not be able to attend the ceremony due to pre-scheduled engagements.

Despite the decision of Congress-led opposition parties not to attend the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building on May 28, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati praised the historic event on Thursday.

Mayawati stated on Twitter that the BSP has always stood above party politics and backed the administration at the Centre on issues of national and public interest.

“Whether it was of Congress in the past or that of the BJP now, the BSP has always supported the government at the Centre on issues related to the country and public interest, rising above party politics and the party sees the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28 in the same context and welcomes it,” Mayawati wrote on Twitter.

Mayawati slammed individuals who opposed the New Parliament building, saying it was unfair to abandon the celebration simply because President Murmu was not present.

“To boycott because it is not being inaugurated by President Draupadi Murmu is, ‘unfair’. The government has built it so it has the right to inaugurate it. It is also unfair to link this with respect to tribal women. They should have thought of this while fielding a candidate against her instead of electing her unanimously,” Mayawati said.

Unable to attend the inauguration ceremony due to ‘pre-scheduled’ engagement

However, she also issued a clarification about her inability to attend the ceremony, citing prior commitments. “I have received the invitation for the program dedicated to the country, that is the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament House, for which I thank and extend my best wishes. But due to my pre-scheduled engagement regarding the continuous review meetings of the party, I will not be able to attend that function,” she Tweeted.

The opposition parties, including the Congress, have announced their boycott of the ceremony to unveil the new Parliament building. They criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to inaugurate the building without the presence of President Droupadi Murmu, deeming it an affront to the esteemed position of the President and a violation of the principles enshrined in the Constitution.
