Mexico’s Foreign Minister, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, has offered congratulations to India for its role as the host of the G20 Presidency, commending the country’s exceptional handling of the summit in New Delhi. The G20 Summit, held from September 9 to 10, saw the gathering of global leaders in the Indian capital.
In her conversation with Indian Media, Mexico’s Foreign Minister expressed her appreciation, saying, “I want to congratulate India and the ministers on the fantastic job done on G20. I think there were great advances in the declaration and a return to many topics that are so crucial for the agenda… the multilateral agenda.”
Furthermore, she extended her congratulations to India for the successful Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, describing it as a significant achievement. She also highlighted the potential for collaboration in the space industry, stating, “I want to congratulate India for landing on the moon. I think that’s a great advancement, and we discussed cooperation in the space industry or we have an agency… a space agency that we want to bring together, I mean we want to collaborate.”
Chandrayaan-3’s ‘Vikram’ lander made history by touching down on the uncharted lunar South Pole on August 23, following a 40-day journey through space. After covering over 100 meters on the lunar surface, the Pragyan Rover was safely positioned and entered sleep mode on September 2, marking India as the first country to achieve this feat.
Mexico’s Foreign Minister also addressed other topics of discussion, saying, “And then we discussed the IT Forum that is, an encounter that’s gonna be taking place in India I guess… and then we are going to participate, of course. We discussed, in certain ways, matters dealing with traditional medicine, which we are very interested in, looking at the Indian experience and vice versa.”
“We have a couple of MOUs that we are signing on Cofepris and the medical entities of India. Finally, we discussed matters of the world, the BRICS, the security council, matters, and I think we agree on mechanisms of how we can relate better. For Mexico, it’s important to participate in the BRICS debates, not to become a member, but we want to be there. And also on the discussions of the security council, how do we, how can we engage in intergovernmental negotiations,” she elaborated.
She concluded by expressing Mexico’s support for India’s candidacy for the Security Council. Earlier, Mexico’s Foreign Minister engaged in a bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The relationship between India and Mexico has consistently been characterized by warmth and cordiality, marked by mutual understanding and expanding bilateral trade and cooperation. Both nations are significant emerging economies, sharing common socio-economic development priorities and challenges, and possessing democratic, secular, and pluralistic systems, along with similar worldviews, as per the Ministry of External Affairs. S Jaishankar is leading the Indian delegation during his week-long visit to New York, where he will address the United Nations General Assembly on September 26.
