Officials claimed on Saturday that the Aizawl Battalion of the 23 Sector Assam Rifles, led by Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), confiscated five soap packs of heroin weighing 62 grammes and detained two suspects.
Based on particular intelligence, an operation was carried out by a joint squad of Assam Rifles and CID (Special Branch), Aizawl. “The approximate cost of the recovered Heroin is Rs. 31,00,000. The recovered consignment and apprehended individuals were handed over to Special Narcotics Police Station CID (Crime), Aizawl on 10 March 2023 for further legal proceedings,” as per an official release.
The continued smuggling of illicit substances is a serious source of concern for the state of Mizoram, according to an official announcement. The Assam Rifles, dubbed the “Sentinels of the Northeast,” have been effective in initiating similar operations against smuggling activities in Mizoram.
Previously on March 10, a combined team of Assam Rifles and the Custom Department, Champhai, discovered 30 packs of illicit foreign-origin cigarettes worth Rs 45 lakhs and detained one individual in a joint operation.
Inspector General Assam Rifles headed the Serchipp Battalion of the 23 Sector (East). According to authorities, the estimated worth of the confiscated foreign-origin cigarettes is Rs 45 lakh.
According to authorities, the confiscated package and arrested suspect were turned over to the Customs Department in Champhai for additional legal procedures. Mizoram is deeply concerned about the continued smuggling of unlawful foreign-origin cigarettes.
