Gracing the India News Manch event held in the national capital, Ruchi Vira on July 29 shed light on how she won the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the role women play in Indian politics, how difficult her journey has been and what the future holds.
Ruchi Vira is an Indian politician currently serving as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha representing Moradabad for the Samajwadi Party. She previously served as a member of the 16th Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh, where she represented the Bijnor constituency. Ruchi Vira is affiliated with the Samajwadi Party.
Speaking on how her party has always given opportunities to women, Ruchi Vira at the India News Manch said, “Out of 62 tickets, 10 were given to women, whereas, NDA gave only 7 tickets. Therefore, would like to bring to your notice that Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav has worked immensely at the ground level for women.”
Vira added, ” Women are half the population of the country. No party can succeed if women are ignored. Usually, women are cornered which ideally should not be done.
When asked what exactly happened at the time of the nomination since Moradabad at the time of Lok Sabha Polls faced a situation where along with Ruchi Vira even ST Hasan filed the nomination, Vira spoke on what exactly was the strategy.
“It is the final nomination which counts. ST Hasan did file his name but I am glad to get seamless support from the party president. And, the results are in front of you,” said Ruchi Vira adding, “I won the election with a margin of more than 1 lakh votes.” Though Vira appeared a bit hesitant when asked if she got support from ST Hasan.
When asked whether Samajwadi Party has changed their stance towards women contesting elections since there have been many instances where it appered the party was partial towards men, Ruchi Vira cleared the air, “Things change with time. However, it is very evident that the party has given fair chance to women and they have even won from their respective areas in Uttar Pradesh.”
Vira also added, “There is no field where women haven’t succeeded. And, we are glad we got an opportunity to serve. ”
When asked whether a shift has been noticed in women not voting for BJP, Ruchi Vira on this said, “It is not only women but we have got votes from different casts. We have never been part of politics where it is all about cast or creed. Our party’s key focus area has always been development.”
She added, “Also, we got a of love from women since there is a mutual love among us.”
Samajwadi Party has been often accused of using the Muslim-Yadav formula. However, for the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls, the party adapted new strategies and focused on Dalits and OBCs. Reacting to this, Ruchi Vira stated, “Our party president felt that the OBCs have been neglected and it was time their issues were focused on.”
She added, “This formula worked for us. Many of our Dalit candidates won along with people from other backward casts. This equation worked for us. I, in fact comes from an upper caste and yet, I got an extensive support from the party.” Ruchi Vira also said, “Our party has the youngest MP and it simply proves, youngsters are being given equal opportunities.”
When asked if there is any internal tussle between BJP in Uttar Pradesh between the chief minister and his deputy, Ruchi Vira claimed, “It is evident there are meetings happening.” While taking a sarcastic dig, she said, “Barabar Dilli Daud rahe hein,” adding, “Central government is crippled and is walking on crutches. People have now understood. Even the vote percentage of INDI Alliance is more than NDA alliance. Therefore, the internal tussle is clearly visible.”
