Mumbai Braces For More Torrential Rain As IMD Issues Orange Alert

Mumbai is bracing for more heavy rainfall today (August 4), with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for the city. Currently, Mumbai is experiencing strong winds and intense rain showers. The forecast predicts heavy rainfall across Mumbai and its suburbs, with the possibility of very heavy rain in isolated areas.

Previously, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Mumbai had issued a yellow alert and a 24-hour warning for the city and surrounding areas. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel as conditions may worsen, potentially leading to waterlogging.

In response to the persistent heavy rain and excess water release from the Khadakwasla Dam, an Army column has been deployed in Ekta Nagar at the district magistrate’s request.

Additionally, the weather agency has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the Ghat regions and a moderate rain warning for the plains of Pune and Satara. An orange alert is also in effect for Thane and four other districts in Maharashtra: Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Nashik.

Flood Alert in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad

Two NDRF teams have been stationed in Balewadi, Pune, and Chinchwad due to ongoing rainfall and a red alert in Pune district. The Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations have issued flood warnings for low-lying areas because of continuous dam water releases. Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar has urged district authorities to take urgent measures to prevent any loss or inconvenience to residents.

The heavy rains in catchment areas have led to continuous water discharge from several dams, including Khadakwasla, Temghar, Varasgoan, Panshet, Pavana, Mulshi, and Bhatghar. Residents in areas such as Baner, Sinhagad Road, Warje, Dandekarpul, and Patil Estate Slums are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions.

In Pimpri-Chinchwad, areas such as Pimple Gurav, Sanghvi, Dapodi, and Harris Bridge are at risk of flooding. The IMD has also issued warnings for drivers traveling through the Ghat sections due to low visibility and the high risk of landslides and falling rocks.
