The Mumbai Crime Branch has apprehended an Afghan national living illegally in the Wadala area of the Mumbai district, according to police reports.
Identified as Zaheer Ali Khan (38), the accused had been residing unlawfully in Mumbai for the past 17 years. Initially, Khan presented a PAN card and a driving license in the name of Zaheer, claiming Indian citizenship. However, upon thorough investigation, it was revealed that he had been providing false information to authorities.
Ghanshyam Nair, in-charge of Mumbai Crime Branch Unit 5, mentioned that the team took action based on information regarding some Afghan nationals living illegally in Mumbai’s Wadala area. The accused was detained for questioning, during which the police discovered his PAN card and driving license under the name of Zaheer, falsely claiming Indian citizenship. Following this discovery, he was taken to the crime branch office for intensive interrogation, during which he confessed to being an Afghan citizen and admitted to living in Mumbai since 2007.
Authorities seized an Afghan passport, PAN card, identity card, and vaccination certificate from his residence as evidence.
Subsequently, the case was presented in court, resulting in the accused being remanded in police custody until 26 February.
