In a move to foster patriotism and instill fundamental values among school children, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced National War Memorial Chapter. This initiative comes in the form of a fresh chapter titled “A Homage to Our Brave Soldiers,” recently added to the Class 7 English textbook.
Centered around the National War Memorial, this chapter by ncert holds profound significance in India’s history. It offers an insightful journey into the origins and significance of the National War Memorial, shedding light on the monumental sacrifices made by valiant soldiers of the Armed Forces post-independence.
The chapter presents this narrative through a heartfelt exchange of letters between two friends. These letters serve as a platform for students to express their deep gratitude for the freedoms they cherish, freedoms preserved through the selfless sacrifices of these courageous individuals.
Positioned as the concluding chapter in the e-book version of the Class 7 English textbook, aptly named ‘Honeycomb,’ the chapter’s placement underscores its importance, leaving a lasting impact on students as they conclude their academic year.
“The objective of this initiative, jointly undertaken by the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Education, is to inculcate the values of patriotism, devotion to duty courage and sacrifice among school children and increase the participation of youth in nation building,” the ministry stated.
The National War Memorial, known as “Rashtriya Samar Smarak” in Hindi, stands as a resounding tribute to the heroic soldiers who willingly laid down their lives in defense of the nation. Inaugurated in January 2019, this national monument occupies a special place in the hearts of Indians.
It serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by troops during pivotal historical events, including the 1962 India-China conflict, the wars with Pakistan in 1947, 1965, and 1971, operations of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka, and the Kargil conflict in 1999.
This collaborative initiative by the NCERT and the Ministry of Defence constitutes a significant stride in nurturing responsible and conscientious citizens of India.
