New Low-Pressure Area Forms Over Bay of Bengal: Will It Bring Rain To Chennai By December 12?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a new weather update for the Bay of Bengal, forecasting the formation of a new low-pressure area. This follows the aftermath of Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Puducherry and caused significant damage to Puducherry and northern Tamil Nadu. Rescue and relief efforts are still underway to assist the affected areas.

The newly forming low-pressure area is expected to develop over the southwest Bay of Bengal. According to IMD predictions, the system will move west-northwest and reach the Sri Lankan coast by December 9. As it progresses, it is likely to intensify into a depression, with the effects beginning to be felt along the Tamil Nadu coast, especially by December 12. As part of the ongoing weather pattern, rain is expected in southern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on December 12 and 13.

For Chennai, the IMD has released the following weather forecast:

• December 7: Partly cloudy skies, with temperatures ranging between 26°C and 33°C.
• December 8: Mostly cloudy, temperatures between 26°C and 33°C.
• December 9: Partly cloudy skies, temperatures between 26°C and 33°C.
• December 10: Generally cloudy with light rain, temperatures between 26°C and 32°C.
• December 11: Rain expected, with temperatures between 25°C and 31°C.
• December 12: Rain expected, temperatures between 25°C and 31°C.

The rain is expected to be a continuation of the effects from Cyclone Fengal, which caused intense weather disturbances in Tamil Nadu just last week. The cyclone’s approach led to heavy rains and strong winds across the state. The rainfall began on November 29 and quickly intensified, leading to waterlogging in several areas. In Madipakkam and other low-lying regions, residents moved vehicles to higher ground, such as the Velachery flyover, to avoid flooding. Roads were left largely deserted, with emergency teams from the police, fire and rescue services, and civic workers deployed in the most vulnerable areas.

As the region braces for more rain, residents are advised to stay updated with IMD forecasts and take necessary precautions as the low-pressure system intensifies over the next few days.
