United States President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden expressed their condolences to the victims of the deadly train accident in Odisha’s Balasore. “Our prayers go to those who have lost loved ones and the many who suffered injuries in this terrible incident,” said Biden, according to the White House’s official statement.
Biden also said that people all across America mourn alongside the people of India. “As the recovery effort continues, we will hold the people of India in our thoughts,” the statement added.
Touted as one of the deadliest rail accidents, the tragedy claimed around 288 lives and injured more than 1000. The three-way accident involved Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express and the goods trains on three separate tracks at Bahanaga Bazar station in Odisha’s Balasore.
A rescue operation is underway and restoration has also started at the accident site.
