Amid preparations for the forthcoming discussion on the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha, leaders of the I.N.D.I.A. parties convened at the office of the Rajya Sabha’s Leader of the Opposition in Parliament to strategize for the parliamentary session.
Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, who was reinstated as a Lok Sabha MP a day ago, is set to initiate the debate on the no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government in the Lower House on Tuesday. The Supreme Court suspended his criminal defamation conviction in the Modi surname case, leading to his reinstatement.
The Narendra Modi-led NDA Government is poised to face a no-confidence motion, brought forth by the opposition parties within the I.N.D.I.A. coalition and accepted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
In line with sources, a time allocation of 12 hours has been designated for the discussion. The ruling BJP is expected to engage in the discourse for approximately seven hours, while the Congress party has been allotted around one hour and 15 minutes.
Other parties, including YSRCP, Shiv Sena, JDU, BJD, BSP, BRS, and LJP, have been allotted a combined total of 2 hours, distributed based on the number of MPs from each party in the House. Meanwhile, a duration of 1 hour and 10 minutes has been assigned for other parties and independent MPs.
The debate concerning the no-confidence motion against the BJP-led government is anticipated to occur on August 8 and 9 in the Lok Sabha, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi slated to respond on August 10.
Throughout the three-day debate that commences today in the Lok Sabha, the Manipur issue is expected to take center stage in discussions regarding the opposition’s no-confidence motion.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has previously expressed willingness for a discussion on Manipur, highlighting the government’s transparency. He also mentioned his readiness to engage in talks if the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, agrees to discuss the matter on August 11.
Since the commencement of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 20, opposition members have been pushing for discussions under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha. This issue has led to a deadlock in the Rajya Sabha since the start of the Monsoon Session.
The turmoil in Manipur has persisted for the past three months following clashes between two tribal communities, Meities and Kukis. These clashes arose when the Manipur High Court requested the state government to consider adding one of the communities to the list of Scheduled Tribes.
