Maharashtra’s Opposition MLAs held discussions with Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar, pressing for an immediate special session of the Assembly amidst the ongoing Maratha quota agitation. They submitted a formal request to the Speaker for this special session to address the quota protest.
The recent demonstrations took a violent turn on Monday as protestors caused damage to the homes and offices of several politicians. The Maratha community has been actively demanding their inclusion in the state’s OBC list for the past few months.
During the ongoing protests, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that the leaders present at the all-party meeting had reached a consensus on the necessity of providing a quota to the Maratha community.
CM Shinde said, “Everyone in the all-party meeting agreed that the Maratha community should get a reservation. However, it was decided that the provision of Maratha quota should be within the legal framework and shouldn’t be seen as an injustice to other communities.”
Quota activist Manoj Jarange has been observing an indefinite fast for over a week in a bid to step up pressure on the government to guarantee reservations for the Maratha community.
The Maratha reservation activists decided to call off their protest after receiving an assurance from CM Shinde regarding the quota demand.
