Opposition Leaders Attend All-Party Meeting on Bangladesh Crisis Amidst Turbulent Developments

Leaders of the Opposition in both the Houses of the Indian Parliament, Mallikarjun Kharge (Rajya Sabha) and Rahul Gandhi (Lok Sabha), attended an all-party meeting convened by the central government on Tuesday to address the crisis in Bangladesh. The meeting aimed to address the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, where the political climate has taken a drastic turn.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was scheduled to brief the meeting on the latest developments. According to official sources, the meeting was set to take place in the morning, providing a platform for comprehensive discussions among Indian political leaders.

The turmoil in Bangladesh reached a critical point on Monday when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position amidst mounting protests. She subsequently landed at the Hindon Air Base near New Delhi aboard a C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft.

The unrest in Bangladesh has been severe, with at least 135 people reported killed on Monday alone. The violence included police shootings, mob beatings, and widespread arson across the country, as detailed by the Dhaka Tribune. According to Prothom Alo, Dhaka Medical College Hospital received around 500 injured individuals, many of whom had sustained gunshot wounds, with 70 admitted for further treatment.

Following the reports of Sheikh Hasina’s departure, the streets of Bangladesh saw celebrations, marking a significant moment in the ongoing protests. The student-led demonstrations initially demanded the abolition of a quota system for government jobs but soon evolved into a broader uprising against Hasina and her ruling Awami League party. Prothom Alo reported that at least 95 people, including 14 police officers, died during clashes in Dhaka on Sunday, with hundreds more injured.
