Pakistan govt “making complete mockery of constitution”: Imran Khan

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan accused the government, its handlers, and the Pakistan Election Commission of “making a complete mockery of the constitution” on Thursday. Khan stated on his official Twitter account that the Pakistan Supreme Court’s choice on whether to hear his party’s petition with a five-member bench or a full court is unimportant. According to Geo News, he made the statements on the dissolution of the apex court’s five-member bench after Justice Amin-Ud-Din Khan recused himself from the bench hearing the election delay issue under Article 184(3).

Imran Khan, head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), emphasized that what is most important to his party is whether or not elections are held in accordance with the requirements of the Constitution. The hearing will be resumed at 11:30 a.m. by Pakistan’s Supreme Court (local time).

According to Geo News, the hearing on the PTI’s petition against the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to postpone elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa did not take place on Thursday. The hearing was scheduled to resume at 11:30 a.m. by the Supreme Court (local time). However, the hearing in court was postponed due to Judge Amin-Ud-recusal. Din’s

Imran Khan tweeted, “Whether it’s a 5 mbr SC bench or Full Bench, it makes no difference to us because all we want to know is if elections will be held within the 90 days’ constitutional provision. Before we dissolved our 2 Prov assemblies, I consulted our top constitutional lawyers, all of whom were.”

He further said, “absolutely clear that the 90-day Constitutional provision on the holding of elections was inviolable. Now Imported Govt of crooks, their handlers & a compromised ECP are making a complete mockery of the Constitution. By cherry-picking which Articles of Constitution they will abide by.”

“They are threatening the very foundation of Pakistan, which is the Constitution & Rule of Law. So petrified are they of elections & so desperate to whitewash their convicted ldrs that they are prepared to destroy the Constitution & any semblance of Rule of Law,” Imran Khan tweeted.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared on Wednesday that elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be held on October 8, the same day as elections in Punjab, according to Geo News. The elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be placed on October 8, according to the ECP. According to the news source, Pakistan’s electoral board stated that the election schedule will be released in due course.

In a notification, the ECP said, “… the Election Commission of Pakistan notifies 8 October 2023 as the poll date for the General Elections to the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Election Programme for election under Section 57(2) of the Elections Act, 2017 will be issued in due course of time.”

Earlier, Pakistan’s electoral commission declared that the polls in Punjab would be postponed. Following the ECP’s decision to postpone the polls, the PTI petitioned the Supreme Court. Since the security and financial bodies declined to help the electoral body during the approaching elections, the ECP decided to cancel its earlier statement for Punjab polls.
