PM Modi Becomes the 1st Foreign Head of Government To Receive Bhutan’s Highest Civilian Honour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored with Bhutan’s highest civilian award, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, during his two-day state visit to Bhutan. This distinction makes him the first non-Bhutanese individual to receive this prestigious honor. The award was conferred by Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck during their meeting in Thimphu, the capital city.

PM Modi’s recognition as the first foreign head of government to be bestowed with Bhutan’s top civilian honor underscores the significance of his visit. The Order of the Druk Gyalpo, recognized for lifetime achievements, holds the highest position in Bhutan’s honor system, surpassing all other orders, decorations, and medals.

PM Modi shared on X, “A very memorable welcome in Bhutan! Throughout the way, there were several people who had gathered. I cherish their affection greatly.”

Since its establishment, this esteemed award has been granted to only four distinguished personalities, including Her Majesty Royal Queen Grandmother Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck in 2008, His Holiness Je Thrizur Tenzin Dendup (68th Je Khenpo of Bhutan) in 2008, and His Holiness Je Khenpo Trulku Ngawang Jigme Choedra in 2018. Je Khenpo serves as the Chief Abbot of the Central Monastic Body of Bhutan.
