On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated Pingali Venkayya, the designer of the Indian National Flag, on his birth anniversary. Modi praised Venkayya’s efforts in creating the Tricolour and emphasized that his contributions will always be remembered.

Who is Pingali Venkayya?
Born near Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on August 2, 1876, Pingali Venkayya designed numerous models of the national flag. In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi approved one of his designs at an Indian National Congress meeting in Vijayawada. The national flag we have today is based on Venkayya’s design.
Venkayya, a dedicated freedom fighter and the creator of the Indian national flag, became a symbol of India’s spirit of independence. He passed away on July 4, 1963.
In his 112th ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on July 28, Prime Minister Modi encouraged all Indians to participate in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign to celebrate Independence Day. He noted the trend of taking selfies with the national flag and sharing them on social media and urged party leaders and workers to ensure the flag is hoisted on homes, offices, and shops from August 13 to 15.
The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign is part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, which aims to promote patriotism and awareness about the Indian National Flag as India marks 75 years of independence. This initiative is dedicated to celebrating India’s history, culture, and achievements and aligns with PM Modi’s vision of an empowered and self-reliant India.
