Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called a high-level meeting with railway officials on Saturday to assess the situation following an accident involving three trains in Odisha on Friday night that killed at least 238 people.
The meeting will take place today, according to government sources. According to the latest South Eastern Railway estimates, the death toll in the train accident in Balasore involving two express trains (Bengaluru-Howrah Express and Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express) and a goods train has risen to 238.
According to the South Eastern Railway, approximately 650 injured passengers have been transported to hospitals in Gopalpur, Khantapara, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Soro.
Prime Minister Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the deceased’s kin on Friday.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the ex-gratia amount will be distributed from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the deceased’s next of kin.
