Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a poignant trip down memory lane on Monday as he recalled his first entry into Parliament as a Member of Parliament (MP) in 2014. With a touch of humility and gratitude, he shared the profound impact that moment had on him, emphasizing the significance of the temple of democracy that Parliament represents.
During a pivotal discussion in the Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister initiated the discourse on the “Parliamentary journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – achievements, experiences, memories, and learnings.” This discussion marked a momentous occasion as the Parliament prepared to shift to its new state-of-the-art building, and Modi couldn’t help but dwell on the emotional resonance of bidding farewell to the current structure.
The Special Session, which commenced on Monday, is set to continue until Friday, making it a week filled with reflective moments and discussions on the nation’s democratic history.
Amidst the towering corridors and echoing chambers of the old Parliament building, Modi expressed the mixed emotions shared by many as they said their goodbyes. “Bidding goodbye to this building is an emotional moment…Many bitter-sweet memories have been associated with it. We have all witnessed differences and disputes in the Parliament but at the same time, we have witnessed ‘Parivaar bhaav,'” he remarked.
PM Modi recounted his first steps into Parliament, a moment he described as deeply emotional. “When I first entered this building as an MP, I bowed down and honored the temple of democracy. It was an emotional moment for me. I could have never imagined that a child belonging to a poor family, living on the railway platform would ever be able to enter the Parliament. I never imagined that I would get so much love from people,” he added, evoking a sense of awe at the democratic process that allowed a person like him to rise to such heights.
Tribute to former Prime Minister’s of India: PM Modi
Modi also took the opportunity to remember and pay tribute to the contributions of former Prime Ministers. He harked back to the inspirational words of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, during the nation’s hard-fought independence. Nehru’s iconic “At the stroke of the midnight…” speech still reverberates within the hallowed walls of the historic building, inspiring those who continue to tread the path of democracy.
In a more somber tone, the Prime Minister revisited a painful chapter in India’s parliamentary history—the terror attack on the Parliament in 2001. He underscored that this was not just an attack on a building but an assault on the very essence of democracy and the soul of the nation. Modi expressed his deep respect and gratitude to those who displayed exceptional bravery, taking bullets to their chests to safeguard the Parliament and its members during that fateful event.
Indian MPs committed themselves during Covid
As the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s parliamentarians rose to the occasion, demonstrating unwavering dedication to their duties. Modi commended the resilience of the MPs, many of whom attended sessions despite health challenges. During these trying times, they upheld the sanctity of the Parliament, viewing it as an essential part of their commitment to India’s growth journey. In doing so, they dispelled any doubts about the nation’s post-independence unity, reinforcing the enduring trust people have in the institution of Parliament.
Shifting gears to a more recent achievement, Modi celebrated the success of the G20 Summit, a landmark event held in the national capital earlier in the month. The significance of this achievement extended beyond borders, as the African Union joined as a full member during the summit. The Prime Minister recalled the poignant moment when this announcement was made, noting that it was a testament to India’s strength and capacity to meet high hopes and expectations.
Modi turned his gaze toward the future and expressed full support for the proposed P20 summit—a gathering of G20 Parliament Speakers. He reassured Speaker Om Birla that the government stood firmly behind this initiative, highlighting the importance of such forums in facilitating dialogue and cooperation on a global scale.

Importantly, he emphasized that this achievement was a shared success, transcending individual or political affiliations, and belonged to the entire nation—a testament to the collective spirit of 140 crore citizens of India.
