Indian Railways is set to connect Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country by introducing the Union Territory’s first electric train on February 20, 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off this historic initiative, marking a significant step towards eco-friendly rail connectivity in the valley.
Route Details: The electric train will operate on the newly electrified stretch between Sangaldan station and Baramulla station, part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramula Rail Link Project (USBRL). This project falls under the administrative control of Northern Railway’s Firozpur division, showcasing the commitment to sustainable rail transportation.
Trial Run and Inspection: In preparation for the inauguration, a trial run of the Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train was conducted on the Khari-Sangaldan section of the USBRL project. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) recently inspected the Khari to Sangaldan railway stations, ensuring safety and compliance with standards.
Other Projects Dedicated by PM Modi: On the same day, PM Modi will dedicate various other rail projects, including the 48-km-long Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section and the 185.66-km-long Baramulla-Srinagar-Banihal-Sangaldan section. Notably, the Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section features the use of Ballast Less Track (BLT), enhancing the riding experience for passengers.
According to official releases, these rail projects aim to improve connectivity, ensure environmental sustainability, and contribute to the overall economic development of the region. The dedication of these projects underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.
