President Droupadi Murmu Mourns Passing of Legal Luminary Fali S Nariman

President Droupadi Murmu expressed profound sorrow on Wednesday over the demise of distinguished jurist and Senior Advocate Fali S Nariman, who passed away at the age of 95 in the national capital early Wednesday morning.

In a heartfelt post on social media, President Murmu conveyed her condolences, stating, “I am saddened to learn that Fali Nariman, a titan among legal luminaries, is no more. Among the wisest experts on our Constitution, he was also a globally respected jurist. He served the nation in various roles, including as a member of the Rajya Sabha, with equal dedication.”

She went on to acknowledge Nariman’s significant contributions to enriching constitutional practices and fortifying the legal system, emphasizing that his legacy will be remembered for a long time. President Murmu extended her condolences to his family, colleagues, and admirers.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud led bench also paid tribute to Fali S Nariman, describing him as a voice that represented the conscience of a generation. Attorney General for India R Venkataramani expressed the difficulty in digesting the news of Nariman’s passing, while Solicitor General Tushar Mehta deemed it not only a loss to the legal fraternity but a loss to the entire nation.

Mehta, reflecting on Nariman’s impact, stated, “Not only the legal fraternity but the nation has lost a towering figure of intellect and wisdom. The country has lost an epitome of what righteousness stood for. A doyen, paragon, and a legend in his own lifetime have left us, leaving the jurisprudence enriched by his immense contribution.”

Recalling personal interactions with Nariman, Mehta shared cherished memories of sharing homemade buttermilk in the Supreme Court corridors and receiving autographed books from the esteemed jurist. He emphasized that Nariman’s departure leaves the legal fraternity intellectually poorer, and expressed, “Such intellectual giants do not die. They remain immortal through their contribution. There cannot be and will not be another Fali Nariman.”
