In a significant move to bolster the already strong India-Mauritius relationship, President Droupadi Murmu embarked on a three-day state visit to Mauritius, marking a series of engagements aimed at deepening bilateral relations and cooperation between the two nations. The visit, which began on Monday, saw President Murmu receiving a warm welcome from Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, complete with full state honors.

During a special meeting, the leaders engaged in a “tete-a-tete” to explore avenues for further enhancing the India-Mauritius partnership. A highlight of this meeting was President Murmu’s presentation of an Indian RuPay card to PM Jugnauth, symbolizing the growing financial linkage and cooperation between the two countries, following the launch of RuPay card services in Mauritius earlier in February.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, took to X to announce the President’s arrival and the objectives of the visit, emphasizing the intention to impart further momentum to the historic and deeply rooted ties between India and Mauritius. Jaiswal highlighted the visit as a “new milestone” in the bilateral relationship, underlining the significance of President Murmu’s role as the Chief Guest at the Mauritian National Day celebrations.

President Murmu’s agenda includes several key bilateral meetings with Mauritian officials, including President Prithvirajsing Roopun and PM Jugnauth, alongside engagements with other significant figures such as the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. These meetings underscore the multifaceted nature of the India-Mauritius relationship, spanning various sectors and deepening people-to-people ties.

A pivotal aspect of the visit is the joint inauguration of 14 India-assisted projects by President Murmu and PM Jugnauth, showcasing India’s vibrant development partnership with Mauritius. This collaboration forms a crucial pillar of the bilateral relationship, encompassing a wide range of sectors. Additionally, the visit will feature the exchange of important bilateral agreements aimed at enhancing institutional collaboration and capacity-building cooperation between the two nations.

In a gesture aimed at connecting with the Mauritian populace and the Indian diaspora, President Murmu is scheduled to address the youth at the University of Mauritius and engage with socio-cultural organizations at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute. These interactions are expected to reinforce the cultural and educational ties that bind India and Mauritius, further solidifying the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
