Rabindranath Tagore’s 83rd Death Anniversary, Know The List Of Films Based On Him

Rabindranath Tagore, who was not just a poet and a writer but is worshipped in India. He is an emotion for Bengalis, he is the good night story for kids, he is patriotism for India. His keen observations and thoughts were beautifully expressed in his literature.

Today, August 7, 2024 marks the 83rd death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee pens down heartfelt message on social media handla X.

She quotes, “On the death anniversary of the universal poet Rabindranath Tagore, I offer my heartfelt respect and bow to the Tagore of our life. He surrounds us every day of the year, every moment. His ideal is our path. He is our guide.”

Rabindranath Tagore’s art of writing can be seen in Indian films. Several serials and Indian films are based on his stories.

Chokher Bali

The film “Chokher Bali” was released in 2003, starring Aishwarya Rai and Raima Sen in the lead roles, with Radhika Apte playing a significant part. Aishwarya Rai portrayed Binodini, a young widow, and her performance was highly acclaimed. The film received numerous awards and is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Uphaar

Released in 1971, “Uphaar” is based on Rabindranath Tagore’s famous story “Sampati.” Directed by Roy Sudhendu, the film features Jaya Bachchan in the lead role. Her simplicity and acting were well-received, highlighting the beauty and depth of relationships. Jaya’s character in the film is named Meenu. You can watch “Uphaar” on Amazon Prime Video.

Do Bigha Zameen

“Do Bigha Zameen,” released in 1953, was the first Indian film to win an international award. Directed by Bimal Roy, the film stars Balraj Sahni and Nirupama Roy in the lead roles, with Meena Kumari playing a crucial role as Thakuraine. The story is based on Rabindranath Tagore’s Bengali work “Dui Bigha Zomi.” It is available for streaming on Zee5 and MXPlayer.

Kabuliwala

One of Rabindranath Tagore’s most beloved stories, “Kabuliwala,” was adapted into a film by Bimal Roy in 1961. Balraj Sahni played the lead role, and the song “Ae Mere Pyare Watan Ae Mere Bichde Watan” from the film remains inspirational. You can watch “Kabuliwala” for free on YouTube.

Milan

Rabindranath Tagore’s works have inspired films in various languages, including Bengali and Hindi. “Milan,” directed by Nitin Bose in 1945-46, was based on Tagore’s novel “Nauka Doobi.” The film starred Dilip Kumar in the lead role and was a major hit.
