Rahul Gandhi starts shifting belongings ahead of vacating official bungalow

In the Modi Surname Defamation Case, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi received a notice to leave the government bungalow after getting a sentence of 2 years in the Modi Surname Defamation Case. Rahul Gandhi is vacating the government bungalow at 10 Tughlaq Lane, Delhi. His belongings are being shifted to Sonia Gandhi’s house (10 Janpath). They will soon start living here. On March 23, the Surat court sentenced him to two years imprisonment in a defamation case. However, he was also given bail in a short time.

Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership was cancelled the next day after the sentence was announced in the defamation case. On March 27, he was also notified to vacate the bungalow. After receiving the notice, Rahul said he has many good memories attached to the government bungalow. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge suggested he shift to his or Sonia’s bungalow.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat had given time till April 22 Rahul Gandhi, to vacate the government bungalow. The next day after receiving the notice, Rahul Gandhi sent a written reply to Dr Mohit Ranjan, deputy secretary of the Lok Sabha Secretariat. In which he had said that he would vacate the bungalow.

Rahul Gandhi replied to the Lok Sabha Secretary- ‘I was elected Lok Sabha MP 4 times. This is the mandate of the people, for which I am thankful. I have many good memories attached to this house. I will comply with the order given in the notice. This bungalow was allotted to Rahul in 2005 when he was first elected as MP from Amethi in 2004.

In fact, the Supreme Court had said in a 2013 decision that if any MP or MLA were found guilty in a lower court, he would be disqualified from membership of Parliament or the Legislative Assembly. Under this rule, Rahul’s parliament membership has been cancelled.

The hearing on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s appeal against the conviction in the defamation case was completed in the Surat Sessions Court on Thursday. The court has reserved the verdict, which will be pronounced on April 20.
