Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his view on the Women’s Reservation Bill, suggesting that it serves as a “distraction tactic” employed by the BJP-led government. According to him, this tactic is aimed at diverting attention away from pressing demands, such as conducting a caste census. He voiced uncertainty regarding the bill’s implementation timeline.
Speaking at a press conference shortly after the bill’s passage in the Special Session of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi called for the immediate release of data from the previous caste census and advocated for a new caste census to accurately assess the population of OBCs (Other Backward Classes) and other marginalized groups.
While Rahul Gandhi affirmed his party’s support for the Women’s Reservation Bill, he emphasized the need for clarity regarding its implementation date, asserting that it entails a census and delimitation process that may take several years. He contended that the bill could be implemented without significant complication but suggested that the government was deliberately delaying it, characterizing it as a “distraction tactic” meant to divert attention.
Rahul Gandhi raised questions about the government’s commitment to OBCs, particularly in the context of their underrepresentation in high-ranking government positions. He pointed out the limited presence of OBC individuals among top government officials and questioned the actions taken by Prime Minister Modi to address this issue.
During the debate on the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi had previously highlighted the low representation of OBCs in secretary-level posts within the central government. The BJP responded by claiming that they have a larger representation of OBCs and that their OBC MPs outnumbered those from the Congress party.
The 128th Constitutional Amendment Bill 2023, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was passed during the Special Session of Parliament, which concluded a day earlier than scheduled following the bill’s passage. Notably, this bill marks the first legislative action in Parliament’s new building.
