The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is the largest Central Armed Police Force in India. Originally known as the Crown Representatives Police when it was established on July 27, 1939, it was renamed following the passage of the CRPF Act on December 28, 1949, according to the CRPF’s official website. Besides its duties in maintaining law and order and combating insurgency, the CRPF has also been vital in managing General Elections in recent years, the website notes.
The CRPF is essential in protecting key Central Government facilities, such as airports, power plants, bridges, Doordarshan Kendras, All India Radio Stations, the residences of Governors and Chief Ministers, nationalized banks, and various other government establishments in states affected by insurgency. Additionally, 16 companies are designated to provide security for three highly sensitive sites: Krishna Janma Bhoomi, the Shahi Idgah Masjid complex in Mathura, and the Ram Janma Bhoomi temple in Ayodhya.
The CRPF also assigns 6 companies to safeguard the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra, Jammu, which is located in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, the CRPF offers static guard services for the residences and offices of the Prime Minister, various Union Ministers, and other high-profile dignitaries.
