Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case Convicts Deported to Sri Lanka from Chennai Airport

Murugan, Robert, and Jayakumar, convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, were deported to Sri Lanka from Chennai airport on Wednesday morning. After receiving their passports and clearance from the Sri Lankan government, the three convicts, who were staying at the Trichy refugee camp, were escorted to the airport by the Trichy police.

Notably, Murugan’s wife, Nalini, also a convict in the case, was present at the Chennai airport to bid farewell to her husband before his deportation.

Earlier in March, Nalini filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking permission from the Central and State Governments for her husband Murugan to obtain a passport and settle in the United Kingdom with their daughter. Mentioning that Murugan is currently held in a special camp in Trichy district as a Sri Lankan citizen, Nalini emphasized their desire to reunite with their daughter in London.

Following the Supreme Court’s order on November 12, 2022, to release all seven convicts, including Nalini and Murugan, Nalini highlighted the urgency of joining her daughter due to the deteriorating conditions in the camp, which led to the deaths of two individuals within a month. She requested adequate security from the police if necessary.

Nalini, the country’s longest-serving woman prisoner serving a life sentence, was released from Vellore jail following the Supreme Court’s order, which freed all six convicts involved in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, including Nalini Sriharan and RP Ravichandran.
