On the sidelines of the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) in New Delhi, Valentina Matviyenko, Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, held a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Matvienko also had brief interactions with several other dignitaries, including Nkosiyakhe Amos Masondo, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces of the Republic of South Africa, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of South Africa, Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council of the UAE, and Dr. Puan Maharani, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia. The Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation is also represented at the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit by the First Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council, Andrei Turchak.
Additionally, during the P20 Summit in Delhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla conducted a bilateral meeting with Kim Jin-Pyo, the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea. At the outset of the P20 Summit, Prime Minister Modi underscored that India has been confronting and combatting cross-border terrorism for numerous years.
PM Modi said,” I am told, Speaker Om Birla will take you to the new building of Parliament. India has been facing cross-border terrorism for many years now. Terrorists have taken the lives of thousands of our people. Nearly 20 years ago, the old Parliament building, which is near the old one, came under attack by terrorists. You will be shocked to know that Parliament was in session at the time of the attack.”
He further noted that India has waged a prolonged battle against the menace of terrorism in all its various forms and manifestations. He also mentioned that the world is increasingly recognizing the threat it poses to global peace and civilian security.
In a noteworthy statement amid the ongoing Israeli air raids in Gaza, triggered by the preceding Hamas terror attacks, PM Modi said, “Whatever be the cause or motivations, terrorism is against humanity. We will have to fight terrorism. Also, it is disheartening to see that there is no consensus among countries on the language and definition of terrorism. Terrorists are taking advantage of this.”
