EAM S Jaishankar shed light on his new book, “Why Bharat Matters,” which delves into India’s global aspirations and draws parallels with the Ramayan to offer insights into diplomatic strategies. Jaishankar emphasized that the book is a blend of his roles as a diplomat, politician, and academician.
Reflecting on his diplomatic experience, Jaishankar noted that the book aims to communicate complex ideas to the general public, drawing inspiration from the timeless stories of the Ramayan and Mahabharat. He highlighted the importance of using familiar cultural references to bridge the gap between academic concepts and everyday understanding.
Jaishankar drew a parallel between Lord Ram’s coalition-building skills in the face of Ravana and the diplomatic prowess of characters like Angad in the Ramayan. He emphasized that constructing a coalition requires careful planning, echoing the importance of diplomacy in the modern world.
Responding to the book’s title, “Why Bharat Matters,” Jaishankar explained that the term “Bharat” holds cultural, civilizational, and identity connotations. He stressed that as India prepares for the future, a confident and self-reliant Bharat is crucial. The book’s last chapter explores the significance of Bharat in the context of India’s evolving identity and its role on the global stage.
On December 30, Jaishankar presented the first copy of his book to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The book is set to be released in early 2024, offering readers a nuanced perspective on India’s journey to global prominence.
Jaishankar’s previous book, “The India Way: Strategies for an Uncertain World,” analyzed challenges and proposed policy responses, showcasing his expertise as a former Indian Foreign Service Officer with extensive diplomatic experience.
