A court in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur delivered a verdict on Wednesday, finding Samajwadi Party leader Mohammed Abdullah Azam Khan, his wife Tanzeem Fatima, and their son Abdullah Azam Khan guilty in a case related to fraudulent birth certificates. The court handed down a seven-year prison sentence and imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on all three individuals.
Former DGS (Crime) Arun Saxena commented on the court’s decision, explaining that Abdullah Azam Khan possessed two birth certificates, which prompted the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) by Akash Saxena. Subsequently, an investigation was carried out, leading to the filing of a charge sheet. The court’s verdict resulted in a maximum seven-year prison term for all three convicts, along with a fine of approximately Rs 15,000.
It was revealed that Azam Khan’s first birth certificate was issued on January 1, 1993, while the other certificate, created in Lucknow, listed his birthdate as September 30, 1990.
On September 26, the Supreme Court referred the matter to the District Judge in Muradabad to address questions regarding the correct birthdate of Khan and provide findings for further consideration. The correct birthdate is a crucial factor in determining the issues raised and ascertaining juvenility.
Abdullah Azam Khan had appealed to the Supreme Court after the Allahabad High Court declined to stay his disqualification as an MLA from the Uttar Pradesh assembly in connection with a 2008 protest case. He argued that he was a juvenile at the time of the incident and contested the Allahabad High Court’s order from March 17.
Mohammed Abdullah Azam Khan faced disqualification from the UP Legislative Assembly after being convicted and sentenced to two years in prison in a 15-year-old case. Abdullah Azam Khan had represented Suar in the Rampur district in the Assembly.
Both Abdullah Azam Khan and his father were convicted by a local court in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly using criminal force to obstruct a public servant from discharging his duties and other violations of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to a protest on a state highway in January 2008.
