The Sandeshkhali case from West Bengal has reached to the Supreme Court where the Mamata Banerjee government challenges the Parliament committee notice to her top officers. The case has already ignited a political firestorm across the country.
The notice was issued by the Privileges Committee following an incident where state BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar sustained injuries during a confrontation with police officers while a party delegation visited a remote island.
The Chief Secretary of West Bengal, the Director General of Police for the state, the District Magistrate, the Superintendent of Police, and the police station in-charge were instructed to attend the panel’s session on Monday. However, the West Bengal government has urged for an early hearing in the respective case.
The Supreme Court was already scheduled to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) requesting a court-monitored investigation into the allegations made by residents of Sandeshkhali.
The case revolves around a Trinamool leader and local influential figure, Sheikh Sahajan, along with his associates, who have been accused of systematically exploiting villagers and engaging in multiple instances of sexual assault. While two of his associates, Uttam Sardar and Shibu Prasad Hazra, have been apprehended, Sahajan remains at large.
Governor CV Ananda Bose, following his visit to Sandeshkhali, disclosed that numerous women have come forward to him, reporting instances of harassment and intimidation. He further stated that he has forwarded their written complaints to the state government.
Meanwhile the TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has poured blame in the ruling BJP, “Instead of peace, they are starting fires,” she has claimed.
