Sandip Ghosh’s Membership Suspended By IMA Following Kolkata Rape Incident

Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has had his membership suspended by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) following allegations of financial irregularities and mishandling of a rape-murder case. The decision to suspend Ghosh comes in light of his alleged failures in managing the sensitive case of a trainee doctor, whose body was discovered with severe injuries on August 9, 2024.

On August 27, 2024, forensic experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi arrived in Kolkata to conduct a polygraph test on Dr. Ghosh. This test is part of a broader investigation into the claims against him. The IMA’s suspension of Ghosh followed serious complaints from the victim’s family about his lack of empathy and inadequate handling of the incident.

According to the IMA, the national president, Dr. RV Asokan, visited the victim’s family, who expressed frustration over Ghosh’s handling of the situation. The family criticized him for failing to respond with the required sensitivity and responsibility. The IMA highlighted that Ghosh’s actions have brought significant disrepute to the medical profession.

In addition to the IMA’s suspension, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Ghosh on August 24, 2024, following directives from the Calcutta High Court. This FIR is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption at the medical college. The court has instructed the CBI to provide a progress report by September 17, 2024. The CBI’s anti-corruption branch has conducted searches at locations associated with Ghosh and his relatives. Furthermore, the Enforcement Directorate has launched a money laundering investigation concerning financial irregularities during Ghosh’s tenure.

The IMA and other medical associations in Bengal are calling for stringent measures in response to these serious allegations. As the investigation progresses, efforts are focused on addressing the issues highlighted by this case.
