Sanjay Nirupam Warns Congress: Alliance with UBT Sena Could Backfire

Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam has raised concerns over the Shiv Sena (UBT) alliance in Maharashtra, cautioning that the partnership may have detrimental effects for the Congress party.

Following the release of the Shiv Sena (UBT)’s candidate list for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, naming Amol Kirtikar among others, Nirupam expressed apprehension about the Sena’s “extreme stand.” He emphasized the potential negative impact of Congress aligning with the Shiv Sena and urged party leadership to reconsider the alliance.

“Shiv Sena should not adopt an extreme stance. This alliance may lead to significant losses for Congress. Congress leadership must intervene or break the alliance to safeguard the party’s interests. The decision to ally with Shiv Sena could prove self-destructive, not only in Maharashtra but beyond,” Nirupam cautioned during a press conference in Mumbai.

Nirupam highlighted that Balasaheb Thorat’s objections were disregarded, indicating a lack of consideration for the negotiating team’s input. He expressed disappointment over the Sena’s unilateral decisions, undermining the negotiation process.

Considering his options, Nirupam stated, “All possibilities are under consideration. I will assess the situation over the next week and make a decision.”

Pointing out the Sena’s move to field candidates in Mumbai constituencies, Nirupam criticized the strategy as an attempt to sideline Congress. He questioned the feasibility of Congress voters supporting Shiv Sena UBT candidates.

Earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut unveiled the list of 17 candidates, including nominations for various constituencies across Maharashtra.

The alliance between UBT Sena, Congress, and NCP (Sharad Pawar) for the Maharashtra polls has stirred controversy within political circles. With Lok Sabha elections scheduled in five phases starting April 19, the outcome in Maharashtra, with its 48 seats, holds significant importance.

In the previous elections, BJP secured a substantial number of seats in Maharashtra, with Shiv Sena and NCP also securing significant wins. The dynamics of the upcoming polls remain uncertain amidst shifting alliances and evolving political strategies.
