In a significant milestone in the Shraddha Walkar murder case, the Delhi Police announced on Wednesday that hair and bone samples obtained by them matched those of Shraddha.
The mitochondrial DNA report of the samples recovered in Mehrauli’s woodland region and forwarded for testing at the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting Diagnostic (CDFD) in Hyderabad matched those of the victim’s father and sibling, according to the Delhi Police. The bone and hair samples were submitted to Hyderabad for “DNA Mitrocondrial profiling” because the DNA could not be isolated from the body parts.
“Mitochondrial DNA report confirms hair and bone sample matching with Shraddha Walker. Delhi Police has received the report from the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics,” said Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda.
“One piece of bone and a bunch of hair purported to be of the deceased have matched with that of her father and brother which establishes the identity of the bone and hair to be that of Shraddha Walker,” Special CP added.
He further stated that the bones will be sent for post-mortem investigation by a medical board at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Aaftab Amin Poonawala, Shraddha’s live-in lover, is accused of murdering her.
Aftab reportedly cut her corpse into 35 parts, purchased a refrigerator, and kept them in it before disposing of them at various sites in and around Delhi during the night over the following 18 days.
Police had previously stated that Aaftab, who admitted to murdering Shraddha and slicing her body into pieces, provided deceptive replies to inquiries.
Notably, the murder case is now being investigated by the Delhi Police.
Aaftab has filed an application for bail on the grounds that the first investigation into the matter has been concluded.
The first investigation in the case has been concluded, and a charge sheet is to be prepared, according to the bail application filed through legal assistance counsel.
Aaftab Poonawala is being held in judicial detention until December 23.
A polygraph examination and a Narco Analysis examination were also performed on Aaftab.
The Delhi Police will shortly submit a charge sheet in the case.
