Philanthropist and author Sudha Murty was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member on Thursday, nominated by President Droupadi Murmu. The ceremony took place in the Parliament, attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar and Union Minister Piyush Goyal. Sudha Murty’s husband and Infosys co-founder, N. R. Narayana Murthy, accompanied her at the event.
Following her nomination, Prime Minister Modi congratulated Murty and praised her significant contributions to various fields, including social work, philanthropy, and education. He expressed his delight at her nomination and highlighted her presence in the Rajya Sabha as a testament to women’s strength and potential in shaping the nation’s destiny.
After her nomination, Sudha Murty expressed her happiness and acknowledged the added responsibility that comes with the role. She affirmed her commitment to working diligently, particularly for the betterment of the underprivileged.
When asked about entering the political arena, Sudha Murty clarified that she does not consider herself a politician. She emphasized her role as a nominated Rajya Sabha member, distinguishing her work from that of her son-in-law, UK PM Rishi Sunak, who is involved in politics.
Sudha Murty, a renowned author in English and Kannada literature, retired as the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation in December 2021. She has been honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2023 and the Padma Shri in 2006 for her remarkable contributions to social work.
