The Supreme Court has quashed the Gujarat Government’s decision to grant remission to 11 convicts in the case of the gangrape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of seven family members during the 2002 riots in Gujarat.
This decision came after the Gujarat Government had passed remission orders of the convicts for convicts in the said case.
To the Supreme Court’s order, the Gujarat Government said that the State Government was not the appropriate authority to have passed this order in the first place.
A bench that comprised Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan has deemed the PIL challenging.
Bilkis Bano had previously gone on record and called this crime the most gruesome crime that the country has ever seen. While approaching the Supreme Court she also stated how this case has shaken the conscience of the society.
