The Taliban-led Afghanistan appointed a new Charge d’Affaires (acting ambassador), Qadir Shah, in New Delhi, however, the current Afghan Envoy in India Farid Mamundzay opposed the decision. The feud between the two caught attention when the Afghan media shared a letter from Afghans living in India accusing Mamundzay and others of corruption.
Responding to this allegation, Mamundzay called the allegations “one-sided, biased and untrue”. In his press statement, Mamundzay also said that the person who was claimed to have been named the acting ambassador by the Taliban was spreading misinformation and running a baseless and unsubstantiated campaign against officials of the mission.
Mamundzay now finds a difficult battle ahead of him as he struggles to stay in office. Mamundzay was appointed by the previous Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The Taliban regime has taken control of 14 missions abroad but it is yet to post its nominee in Delhi.
Meanwhile, sources state that the MEA has not taken sides and has conveyed to both parties that it is an internal matter that they need to settle on their own.
According to a report in The Indian Express, embassy sources have stated that last month while Mamundzay was away in London, the embassy received communication appointing Qadir Shah as Charge d’affaires. Sources also informed that this was not the first email from the Taliban government but they always ignored them.
