Telangana Declares Holiday And Week-Long Mourning To Honor Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh

The nation is in mourning following the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who died on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. As a mark of respect, the central government has declared a national mourning period. This announcement is expected to affect various official events, with Friday’s scheduled activities likely to be canceled after a Cabinet meeting at 11 a.m. on December 27.

In response, the state governments of Telangana and Karnataka have declared public holidays on December 27, with schools, colleges, and government offices across major cities like Hyderabad and Bangalore remaining closed. Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also announced a seven-day mourning period to honor the former Prime Minister’s monumental contributions to the nation. Other states are yet to confirm similar measures.

Dr. Singh passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. The hospital confirmed that he experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence and was rushed to AIIMS at 8 p.m. Despite efforts by the medical team, he was declared dead at 9:51 p.m. The cause of death was attributed to age-related health issues.

The nation has flooded with tributes from all corners to honor Dr. Singh, hailed as a distinguished economist and visionary leader. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep condolences, praising Dr. Singh for his dedicated efforts to improve the lives of millions of Indians. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also paid his respects, remembering Dr. Singh as a “mentor and guide,” whose wisdom and humility left a profound mark on the nation. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra shared a tribute, highlighting his unwavering commitment and service to India.

As the nation enters this period of mourning, Dr. Singh’s legacy as a key architect of modern India’s economic and political framework continues to inspire across generations.
