A resolution to perform a caste census throughout the state was brought before the assembly on Friday by the Telangana Congress government. One of the promises made to the people of Telangana by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was the caste census. As per the decision of the Council of Ministers on February 4, 2024, “This House resolves to take up a comprehensive door-to-door household survey (Socio, Economic, Educational, Employment, Political and Caste Survey, KULA GANANA) of entire Telangana State in order to plan and implement various Socio, Economic, Educational, Employment and Political opportunities for the amelioration of Backward Classes, SC and ST citizens of the State and other weaker sections of the State.” This was stated in an official statement released by the State Government.
Backward Class Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar initiated the resolution in the State Legislative Assembly on Friday to conduct a caste census in Telangana. This census will gather caste data for targeted welfare & equitable resource distribution.
“According to the decision taken by the Telangana Cabinet on February 4, to formulate and implement various social, economic, educational, employment and political opportunities plans for the advancement of backward classes, schedule castes, schedule tribes and other weaker sections, the Government has decided to conduct a comprehensive household caste enumeration family survey for political employment” Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said in a post on X.
“This is an unheard-of opportunity. He entered politics from the weaker groups that entered politics during their student years, making today an unforgettable day in my life. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of our party, has frequently brought up the caste system. As a result, we will proceed with pertinent information about everyone’s welfare. Although the central government is in charge of this caste census, we are conducting it because of the state-specific circumstances. It is anticipated that this survey will help ensure that SC, ST, BC, and other marginalized groups in the state receive justice. I appreciate our Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti for providing me with this chance.” Added Ponnam Prabhakar.
