Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, stated on Saturday that the state needs to adopt a uniform civil code to put an end to the practise of men entering into “four marriages” and women becoming “child-producing machines.”
The Assam CM was holding a roadshow in Shanivarasanthe Madikeri in the Kodagu district of Karnataka, as part of the campaign for the BJP. Addressing the people, the Assam CM said, “We also have to make Uniform Civil Code. Muslim women and daughters are made to marry over four times. Is it a system? Such a rule should not exist in the world. We have to bring Uniform Civil Code and end this system”.
“Muslim daughters should be made doctors, and engineers, not child-producing machines. BJP has promised of working on Uniform Civil Code if voted to power. I would like to thank the BJP for that,” he added.
Notably, if elected, the BJP has pledged in its manifesto to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the state of Karnataka based on the recommendations of a high-level committee that will be assembled for that purpose.
This announcement is similar to one that the BJP made prior to the Assembly elections in Uttarakhand and Gujarat last year.
The State has seen an increase in campaigning during the last phase leading up to the Assembly elections on May 10.
In Haveri and Badami earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at roadshows and public gatherings. A public rally was also held in Belagavi by Union Minister Amit Shah. Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, held a roadshow there.
Karnataka will hold Assembly elections on May 10 and the results will be tallied on May 13.
