Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday showcased significant progress in the ongoing petroleum refinery project at Barmer, Rajasthan. In a social media post on ‘X’, Puri highlighted the installation of a massive dome roof on the Propylene Double Wall Tank at the Barmer site. This specialized tank features dual walls designed to store hazardous and special chemicals up to 200°F. The inner tank holds the chemicals, while the space between the inner and outer walls serves as a protective barrier.
“The large dome roof of the Propylene Double Wall Tank is being airlifted into place at the Rajasthan Refinery Project in Barmer. The total weight of the roof, including the suspended deck and balancing weights, is an impressive 435 MT. This milestone demonstrates how India’s energy sector is evolving under the dynamic leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji,” Minister Puri stated on ‘X’.
The Greenfield Refinery-cum-Petrochemical Complex at Barmer, Rajasthan, is being developed by HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL), a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the Government of Rajasthan, holding stakes of 74% and 26%, respectively. Conceived in 2008 and initially approved in 2013, the project was reconfigured, and construction began in 2018 under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the HRRL refinery complex will process 9 MMTPA of crude oil and produce over 2.4 million tons of petrochemicals. This will help reduce India’s import bills for petrochemicals. The project is expected to become an anchor industry for western Rajasthan, contributing to India’s goal of achieving 450 MMTPA refining capacity by 2030.
The ministry also noted that the project will enhance India’s self-reliance in petrochemical import substitution. Current petrochemical imports amount to Rs 95,000 crore, while the complex is projected to reduce this bill by Rs 26,000 crore. Additionally, the project has employed approximately 35,000 workers directly and around 100,000 workers indirectly.
